Eating Disorders
such as Anorexia, Bulimia, Binge Eating and Compulsive Overeating are extremely common, contrary to popular belief they are not restricted to by age or gender, from young children to adults be they male or female, anyone can be affected.
Sufferers typically harbour feelings of inadequacy, believing themselves to be worth less than those around them. Some use their EDs as a way to feel some kind of control in their life, restricting their intake in order to manipulate their weight others take comfort in binging, which causes weight gain and makes their self-confidence fall all the more thus making them crave the comfort of food further. In the case of bulimics and anorexics binging this is customarily followed by purging (self-induced vomiting, compulsive exercising, etc) to stop weight gain. An ED is a vicious cycle that can be very easy to get into but extremely difficult to abandon. The problem is that their self-esteem is generally so low that no matter what they do it will never be enough as their image of themselves never improves.
People with these problems are usually very good at hiding them, storing food, using laxatives, excessive exercising and inducing vomiting after meals are all very common ways to do this, quite often the people closest to them won’t even realise there is a problem.
Not only the sufferer is affected, friends and family also find it very hard to deal with such problems, knowing that a loved one is purposely harming them self can be very difficult, feelings of guilt and helplessness for not knowing sooner and not being able to help occur.
